42aa91d4d9 Detect when gobject-introspection is missing 
Instead of a compiler bug error, show a proper error message that asks
whether gobject-introspection is installed.

Fixes #58.

8f9de81e24 reorganization: Move hooks to common.py 
This allows them to be referenced before they are filled, helping avoid
circular dependencies.
